Help with your horse
If you already own a horse, there are times when the two of you reach an impasse that you're unable to cross alone. Some of my clients have me ride their horses regularly to keep them tuned up, others only when they need help on a specific issue. Because I ride the way I teach, I am able to help clarify for the horse what their everyday rider is trying to achieve, so my work with the horse enables him to understand his rider's cues, even when they are still learning the technique, and therefore aren't spot-on. It is one of my favorite parts of my job, because horses don't need me to talk with them in words! On the other hand, who among us has not heard a horse tell us in no uncertain terms, "NO!" It's one of my great pleasures to elicit a "well, maybe..." and then finally a "Cool! Let's do that again!" from a formerly unenthused or uncomprehending horse.
Horse camping
Each year, I take my advanced students on a horse camping trip for a weekend. This gives everyone an opportunity to care for their horses--feeding, cleaning, just hanging out--in a more complete way than a weekly riding lesson can provide. One trip for adults, one for kids, and I do all the cooking, outdoor gourmet. There's lots of trail riding, stories and songs around the campfire, and games for the kids, plus a beach trip with my husband Kris that the kids can hardly wait for each year.
